Dizengoff is a relative new comer when it comes to crafting sound compressors, but they have been getting a lot of positive feedback.
The Dizengoff D864 audio is a recreation of some old school gear. This model is a recreation of the Federal AM864 Vari-mu compressor.

The first thing that you want to consider about this compressor is that it is not really meant for the beginner.
Vari-mu compression is difficult to master but once it is mastered the unique sound is well-worth the effort. If you are new to managing a studio compressor this is likely not the model to get started with.
If you are experienced in audio recording, music production and have worked with a studio compressor before than this is something that you may want to look further into.
The original Federal was designed for use by the US Army which lends to its simple design and high functionality.
The Nuts and Bolts.
The circuitry is based on the 6SQ7. Some would argue that this is not the most efficient design option around but luckily it does bring some unique attributes that studios are finding important to have. The compression curve is delivered in a soft knee style.

This can be tricky as well with this model. When you add too much gain, the sound gets distorted. At the low-end it is tight, and it is highly responsive.
The growl switch is useless when it comes to vocals, but it was cool for bass, it added some pop. It offers a clean sound even with heavy compression.
It delivers the same reliable sound with cymbals. It is not the traditional compressor, but it can be great with specific applications.
Kick drums and snares were great running through this compressor, it gives great analog tube compressor sounds especially with percussion instruments.
If the sound was not so great in these arenas the difficulty level of using this compressor might not be worth the effort but they are, so all in all taking the time to learn how to make it work for you is well-worth the effort.
Overall.
It has a nice price tag and is surprisingly functional for a boutique type model. It is well designed and delivers exactly what you would expect.
There is room for improvement like the grey writing on the black background was likely not the most stellar choice. It can make it difficult to read. Other options come with a blue text, or a much brighter white.
The fact is that the original Federal AM864 is high dollar. It will run you about 2x’s as much as the Dizengoff. This is a good compressor albeit it is complex and can be difficult to learn how to use to get the most out of it.
It is worthy of a spot on your rack if you can master it and it will deliver the unique sounds that set your music recordings apart from the rest.
