$1 INDIAN SLUM Haircut & CRAZY Massage
The day I visited Dharavi — the most crowded slum on the planet, in the heart of Mumbai — I decided to do something crazy: get my hair cut right there. Dharavi is full of barbers, and before going someone told me: “If you don’t get a haircut in Dharavi, you can’t say you’ve really been there." Said and done: I trusted the first barber I met on the street, asked him for a haircut, and also accepted the classic Indian massage you get after the cut. Well... let’s just say it didn’t go exactly as I expected.
With more than 1 million officially registered people living in just over two square kilometers, in Dharavi dozens and dozens of people eat, sleep, and live in spaces reduced to the bare minimum (and imaginable). It’s famous for its various industries, from plastic recycling to leather work, and it’s often described for its vibrant economy generating around one billion dollars a year. Now I hope it’s also famous for its barbers...
