Electronic theory of valency :-Valency electrons:- The electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom determine the valency of an atom and hence called valency electronns.
*Atoms of elements containing 8 electrons in the outermost shell or orbit (2electron for first shell i.e. duplet) are stable.
only those elements having less than 8 electron in the outermost shell of their atoms are taking part in the chemical reaction or capable of chemical combination,
The atoms of an element tends to achieve an octet by the smallest possible change. Therefore the elements having less than four valency electrons will lose and the elements having more than four valency will gain electrons to complete the octet.
There are three modes of chemical combination.
1) By loss and gain electrons.
2) By mutual sharing of electrons.
3) by one sided sharing of electrons.
