Reshaping Retention and Completion Strategies
(The Next Generation University)
The seemingly incompatible needs for U.S. colleges and universities to expand access, increase completion, improve student learning and reduce costs have created new pressures as well as enormous opportunity for innovation in higher education.
Many institutions are responding to these pressures by cutting costs, restricting enrollments and increasing selectivity through enrolling out-of-state and international students who can afford to pay higher rates of tuition. A handful of universities, however, are boldly restructuring operating costs and embracing business efficiencies, and creating clear and accelerated pathways for students. These universities, often encouraged by in system- and state-level policies, are examples of "Next Generation Universities."
