What are UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters are snippets of text that you add to your website URLs. They provide valuable data on where your website traffic comes from, allowing you to more easily analyze the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns.

How Do They Work?

You put UTM parameters to the end of your existing URLs using a specific format.
Each parameter tracks one piece of information, like campaign source (e.g., "google"), campaign medium (e.g., "cpc"), and campaign name (e.g., "summer-sale").

When someone clicks your UTM-tagged link, data is sent to your analytics platform (like Google Analytics) revealing the source of the traffic.

How to Use UTM Parameters?

Tools: I recommend the free UTM parameter builder tool from Google Analytics

Essential Parameters:
👉utm_source: Identifies the source of the traffic (e.g., "google", "facebook", "pinterest")
👉utm_medium: Specifies the kind of traffic (e.g., "cpc", "email", "social")
👉utm_campaign: Names your specific marketing campaign (e.g., "summer-sale", "brand-awareness")
👉(Optional) utm_content: Provides additional details about ad variations or creatives (e.g., "banner-ad", "top-of-funnel")
😉(Optional) utm_term: Tracks specific keywords or paid search terms (e.g., "running-shoes", "discount-code")

UTM parameters ley you to gain granular insights into your marketing performance, make data-driven decisions to optimize your campaigns, and maximize your return on investment (ROI).
