St. Malachy's Prophecy of the End of the World, written in the 12th century, remains one of the greatest mysteries in ecclesiastical history. St. Malachy, an Irish bishop, wrote 112 sentences in Latin describing future popes from Celestine II to the last, ‘Peter the Roman’. According to these prophecies, Benedict XVI would be the penultimate pope, leading to speculation about the papacy of Francis, seen by some as an interim.

Each pope is described with metaphors that surprisingly coincide with their lives or coats of arms. Although the authenticity of these prophecies is debated, some believe they were written in the 16th century to influence the papal election.
Most disturbing is the prediction of ‘Peter the Roman’, who will rule during great tribulations and the destruction of Rome, signalling the end times. This vision has generated theories ranging from conspiracies to spiritual and symbolic interpretations.
🔮 Who was St. Malachi? 🔮
Saint Malachy, born in 1094 as Maelmhaedhoc Ó Morgair, was an Irish archbishop known for his prophetic visions. His life was marked by his religious devotion and ecclesiastical reforms. According to tradition, he had visions during a trip to Rome in 1139, where he supposedly wrote his prophecies, which remained hidden in the Vatican archives until the 16th century.
St. Malachy is famous for several miracles, including the healing of a young blind girl and the resurrection of a child. He predicted local and personal events with astonishing accuracy and died in 1148, in the arms of his friend St Bernard of Clairvaux.

The last prophecy speaks of ‘Petrus Romanus’ or ‘Peter the Roman’, who will lead the Church during the final judgment, concluding with the destruction of Rome and the end of the world. The full sentence reads: ‘During the last persecution of the Holy Roman Church, Peter the Roman will occupy the throne... after which the city of the seven hills will be destroyed, and the terrible judge will judge the people.
Rome, founded in 753 BC, stands on seven hills: Aventine, Palatine, Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline and Celio. These hills have profound symbolic and cultural implications, and have witnessed events that have marked Western civilisation.
This prophecy is seen by some as an apocalyptic warning and by others as a metaphor for spiritual renewal. Although the authenticity of Malachi's prophecies is still debated, their impact on the collective imagination and the history of the Church is undeniable.
