Fetal circulation is a complex process that is different from postnatal circulation.

Here's a simplified flow chart of fetal circulation:

Deoxygenated blood from the fetus is pumped into the right atrium of the heart.

The right atrium contracts, pushing blood through the foramen ovale.

Blood flows from the right atrium into the left atrium through the foramen ovale.
|
v
The left atrium sends oxygenated blood into the left ventricle.
|
v
The left ventricle contracts and pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta.
|
v
Some of the oxygenated blood from the aorta goes to the upper body and head, while the rest is directed through the ductus arteriosus.

In the ductus arteriosus, blood bypasses the fetal lungs and goes directly into the descending aorta.

The descending aorta carries the oxygenated blood to the lower body and placenta.
|

Deoxygenated blood from the lower body and placenta returns to the right atrium through the inferior vena cava.

Deoxygenated blood in the right atrium is then pumped into the right ventricle.

The right ventricle contracts, sending some blood into the pulmonary artery, but most of it is redirected through the ductus arteriosus to the descending aorta.

This deoxygenated blood mixes with the oxygenated blood from the aorta.
|

The mixed blood returns to the placenta, where it receives oxygen and nutrients and releases waste products.

This process continues until birth when changes in pressure and oxygen levels trigger the closure of the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale, redirecting blood flow to the lungs for oxygenation.
