Creating a List in Excel
In this article, we'll look at how to create a list in Excel. Sometimes, we need to create a list for various reasons, such as forcing the entry of specified data, reducing errors or errors during data entry, or simply for speed. Let's take a look at how to create a list in Excel.
An example of the data we'll use to create a list is shown in the image below.
Once we have the data, we want to create a list of departments with only the specified data to choose from.
First, select the section you want to create a list of. Here, I've selected column B to display the entire column. Select the column by selecting it, then go to the Data tab. Under Data Tools, select Data Validation, as shown in the image below.
Once selected, the Data Validation dialog box will appear. In the Allow box, select List. In the Source box, select the data to display in the list. In this example, we'll select the data in =$B$2:$B$8, which is column B, row 2, through column B, row 8, as shown in the image below.
Once selected, click OK. You'll now have a list of all columns available for selection, as shown in the image below.
The results will show a list of data, which will contain duplicates, so be careful. Now you have a list of data. Give it a try!
