Sound design is a massive topic and the science of designing the harmonics and frequency response of a sound is always a common thread. Our ears and brains have an amazing, subconscious capacity for identifying both the harmonics (frequencies) and the amplitude (volume) of those harmonics. In fact, we have hardwired biology in our brain for identifying the relationships between harmonics nearly instantly. Our brains use this information to recognize familiar voices, common sounds and threats.

Sound designers and composers can use this biological “library” of recognition to exaggerate or indicate an emotional context. In this video, I’ll demonstrate some approaches to convey specific emotional contexts using the frequency response of stingers. My intention is to show how the science of sound design relates (and resolves) the challenges a composer of production music encounters with conveying emotion effectively.
