A PLC program is, fundamentally, the manipulation of memory. To write robust automation software, you must understand exactly how that memory is allocated and interpreted.

In this video, we examine the IEC 61131-3 Data Model, focusing specifically on Elementary Data Types. We cover the technical specifications, memory size (bits/bytes), and valid ranges for Booleans, Integers, Reals, Time, and Strings.

Understanding the difference between a signed INT and an unsigned UINT, or knowing when to use REAL vs LREAL, is critical to preventing overflow errors and calculation bugs in your machinery

This is Part 3 of my IEC 61131-3 for Beginners series. We are building a foundation to create complex automation projects using the IEC 61131-3 standard. If you missed the other parts, check them out here:    • IEC 61131-3
