Cryptid (from the Greek κρύπτω - hidden) is a character of mythology, an animal or plant, the existence of which is considered possible by supporters of such areas as cryptozoology and cryptobotany, but is not recognized by the scientific community. A cryptid can be considered a creature that is considered extinct or that is described in legends, but about the existence of which there are eyewitness accounts. Usually, cryptids are understood to mean animals, since the existence of unproven plants is easier to confirm or disprove.
