Tokyo Manga/Internet Cafe ($15/12 Hours)
This is one of the many, many companies that offer Manga/Internet Cafes in Japan. This one is called Manboo! though my favorite company is Gera Gera. They range in price, quality and options however they are extremely convenient and that is one thing they all share in common. You could walk into one for 30 minutes in order to charge your stuff or check something online or stay at them anywhere from 1-12 hours in the day or night. The prices range from a few dollars to about 17 usd for a 12 hr pack on weekends. Some are cheaper than others. They are all open 24 hours always. More things that they have in common are the huge variety of manga, desktop pc's, free unlimited drinks and cheap food menus. Some even have shower rooms and coin laundry as well as other things like free unlimited ice cream, blankets and slippers. If you want to find them while in Japan, just go into Google Maps and in English write manga cafe, manga kissa, internet cafe or the name of one of the companies and you will get the nearest locations to you. Once you go in, you pay a few dollars for your membership card and select your pack. Make note of the time on the receipt that your time started because if you overstay your time limit, they charge about 5 cents per minute average. The price can rack up quickly if you over stay or over sleep so leave on time or you will owe more on the way out!! You can just point to the pack that you want on the sign since there is always one at the counter. I have been to about 8 different companies and the process is always the same. You don't even have to know a word of Japanese to get by but it does help to be able to read the kana for finding these places. If you see the word マンガ or インターネット (manga or internet) followed by a 24hr and pictures of all of these services then you can bet you found one. They are usually located around train stations since mostly the Japanese stay at them over night when they miss the last train. Males and females both regularly go to them, however since they are cubicles I would only go in a group as a female since I have heard of guys sometimes peeking over the cubicles to look at girls but I believe this is quite rare from everything I've actually ever seen myself. Like everything in life, just always use your best judgement. Some of these places are nicer than others and if you're a single female maybe it's best to only go during the day but I will say I have seen quite a bit of single Japanese females stay at them overnight and never have a problem at all. Just be smart in whatever you do, male or female. Knowledge is power.
