OpenOffice.org: It took the world by storm, then it disappeared.
OpenOffice was a free-and-open-source office suite maintained by Sun Microsystems and later briefly by Oracle after their acquisition of Sun in 2009/2010. It probably scared Microsoft, with a somewhat strong penetration rate for its time, but what happened to it, and what was it like?
For some extra context, Microsoft dominated the office suite space in the 90's and also fairly well in the 2000's. OpenOffice, which was forged from StarOffice, a office suite maintained by Star Division (a German company acquired by Sun Microsystems in 1999), put Microsoft's stronghold at risk to a small extent. It never had the ability to come close to a total displacement of Microsoft Office, but by OpenOffice 3, it was popular enough to accidentally DDoS Sun's download servers for the software.
As some side-notes, I am aware I referred to the latter 3 programs incorrectly in my introduction, I couldn't patch that up since I had a cold which affected my voice and I am aware that there are some small errors in my "script", particularly referring to Apache OpenOffice's sponsorship by IBM and with the handling of Solaris after Oracle acquired Sun. I am still relatively new to how open-source software is maintained, and a lot of the aspects of Oracle's acquisition of Sun and Sun products are still quite foreign to me.
I am also aware that I artificially appended the video with a two-to-three minute VTuber debut and how that might nerf this video's performance and retention rate.
