24K gold is not necessarily pure gold. Any gold with a content of 98% or greater is considered 24Karat. Our hardened 24K gold has a gold purity of 99.7%: there are tiny amounts of co-deposited nickel and cobalt. However, most of the hardening comes from the fact that these co-deposited materials disrupt the lattice formation of the gold structure; making a much finer grain deposit. With a finer grain structure the finished plating is much harder. For comparison, our "24K Pure Soft Gold" is a virtually pure gold deposit and is almost 4x softer than our "hardened gold". Imagine the hardened gold molecules as plates being laid on top of each other, whereas the soft gold molecules are like boulders being piled up; the layers of plates will be much more structurally sound than a pile of boulders.
