Wormholes are attracting attention as a way to finally make time travel a reality. Time travel is used in many popular movies, such as British writer HG Wells' science fiction novel "Time Machine", where scientists are seen traveling into the world of the future. Also, as seen in the movie "Back to the Future", the main character is able to slip 30 years into the past. But with all of these concepts, will wormholes really provide us a way to travel into the future?
What we know as a "wormhole" is simply a space-time tunnel that connects a "black hole" and a "white hole". It is said that you can instantly move from one place to another by passing through a wormhole. Its etymology is derived from the term "apple wormhole" named by American physicist John Archibald Wheeler in 1957. This states that it is much faster to dig a hole straight through an apple than moving by following around the surface of it to reach the other side.
Black holes are famous as celestial bodies that likely exist. As shown in Einstein's theory of relativity, it is said that it is difficult to find a black hole directly because they absorb light. However, X-ray observations have indirectly shown where black holes could be found. White holes, on the other hand, are thought to have the property of repelling various substances, as opposed to black holes. Theoretically, one would exist if the direction of time flow could be reversed, but this has never been observed.
It seems that a wormhole would be created if both a black hole and a white hole were connected to each other. Even if white holes do exist, however, they are said to be in a "very unstable state in calculation", and it seems that the white hole would disappear as soon as it was connected to a black hole.
While we are far from making time travel through a wormhole a reality, the idea still plays into the mind of scientists and many filmmakers around the world. Even if we were able to locate an actual wormhole, our technology is not advanced enough to stabilize it and allow us to explore the other side. However, scientists are hopeful that one day in our future this will become a reality and we will be able to see what lies waiting on the other side for us.
