How to Blur part of a static shot in Adobe After Effects
In this Sixty Second tutorial we look at a method to blur a part of a static shot, we cover the following...
1. With your chosen clip imported into After Effects, first you will need to create an Adjustment Layer.
2. In the Menu bar click ‘Layer’ - New - Adjustment Layer
3. Next in the Effects and Presets window search for the Gaussian Blur effect and drag and drop this onto your adjustment layer.
4. In the Gaussian Blur effect controls set the blurriness to 50, which will usually give sufficient blur, but you can increase to around 100 if necessary.
5. Also make sure to tick ‘Repeat Edge Pixels’ as well.
6. Then with your adjustment layer selected, select the pen tool and by left clicking on your adjustment layer you set mask points to choose the area of the image you want to blur.
7. By left clicking back on the original point you set, the mask will be complete.
8. You can make the feather the edge of the mask to make the edges of the blur a bit smoother.
9. In the Adjustment layer left click the arrows to open ‘Masks’, ‘Mask 1’ and then in these options you can change mask feather to around 25 and Mask Expansion to 10.
10. You can then adjust these settings and the strength of the Gaussian blur to get your desired look.
