During World War 2, Nazi Germany built something that had never existed before and has never been built since. A gun so massive it could only travel by railway. A weapon so powerful its shells could penetrate 30 meters of reinforced concrete underground.
Its name was Schwerer Gustav. It weighed 1,350 tons. Its barrel was 80 centimeters wide. Each shell it fired weighed 7 tons and could travel over 37 kilometers.
It took a crew of 2,500 soldiers just to operate it. Setting it up in position took three days. After every single shot, the crew needed two full hours to reload before firing again.
Its most devastating moment came during the Siege of Sevastopol in 1942, where it destroyed underground ammunition bunkers that were thought to be completely unreachable.
But despite its terrifying power, Gustav was almost useless in practice. It could only move on specially built railway tracks. It could not be repositioned quickly. It was a sitting target for enemy aircraft.
As the war turned against Germany, the army made a decision. Rather than let Gustav fall into Allied hands, they destroyed it themselves.
The most powerful gun ever built never fired enough shots to matter.
