The Defense Forces' Flag Day Parade: A Celebration of National Defense and Military Tradition
The Defense Forces' Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 4th, which is also the birthday of Marshal Mannerheim, the commander-in-chief of the Finnish army during the Winter War and the Continuation War. The national military parade is a way of honoring the veterans and the current service members who protect Finland's sovereignty and security. The parade also showcases the equipment and capabilities of the Defense Forces and other authorities.
The national parade is held in a different city each year, following a certain pattern: it is held in Helsinki every time Finland celebrates a multiple of ten or five years of independence. For example, in 2017, the parade was held in Helsinki to mark the centenary of Finland's independence. In 2023, the parade was held in Jyväskylä. The theme of the parade is "Readiness at all times - The Defense Forces as Finland's safeguard".
The parade consists of several events that are open to the public. The program includes a review of troops and a march-past on the Senate Square, a display of equipment and vehicles on the Citizen's Square, a flypast of helicopters and fighter jets, and a concert by the Defense Forces' summer tour on the Lounaispuisto Park. The parade is attended by troops from the Army, Navy, Air Force, National Defence University, Border Guard, as well as veteran and national defense organizations. The parade involves more than 1,600 personnel, over 40 vehicles and 14 aircraft, as well as a joint canine unit of various authorities.
