The history of Japanese tea, from its mythical origins, to monastic and aristocratic stimulant, all the way to the popular and refined drink of today, including the developments that brought sencha, matcha, and kabusecha into being.

2737 BC – legendary discovery of tea by Shennong
760 AD – Chájīng, 'the Classic of Tea‘, written by the Chinese scholar Lu Yu
805 – Japanese monks Saichō & Kūkai bring tea seeds to Japan
814 – first recorded instance of a Japanese Emperor, Saga, tasting tea
1191 – Buddhist monk Eisai (1141-1215) brings Zen Buddhism, whipped tea, and tea seeds to Japan, later penning Kissa Yōjōki, ‘Drinking Tea for Health‘
1522–91 – life of tea mater Sen no Rikyū heavily influences Japanese tea ceremony practices and the wabi sabi aesthetic
1587 – The Grand Kitano Tea Gathering occurs, the largest tea gathering in Japanese history
1641–1853 – sakoku policies restrict foreign trade, and Japan relies on internal tea production and culture; during this time, the matcha style of tea is perfected
1738 – Nagatani Sōen steams tea for the first time, creating sencha
