So I'd say there's pros and cons to the two different methods. While the first method with the solids is easy to make and manipulate to match the audio I feel like making the adjust within the color page typically produces a nicer looking effect. You could however combine the two methods and in stead of using solid colors, make multiple adjustment layers each with a different color and match it to the beat that way. The main goal was to give enough info to start experimenting for yourself and develop a method that works for your project.
