Part Two of the Theoretical Mechanics Exam: Statics, or the study of bodies at constant velocity or at rest.
This exam question involves determining the various forces acting on a body.
Although the situation varies each time, we encourage you to always use the same method:
0) Divide the problem into several systems.
1) For each system, draw the forces:
weight;
constraints (strings, etc.);
supports and friction.
2) Choose a coordinate system, ideally with x in the preferred direction of motion.
3) Write and solve the equations of statics, noting that the sum of the forces is equal to 0 (translation) and that the sum of the moments is equal to 0 (rotation). As a reminder, moments of force can be calculated using the lever arm as follows: M = Bdl * F, where Bdl is the lever arm, i.e., the perpendicular distance between the axis of rotation and the line of action of the force.
