Molotov Cocktail / History of the Name / Documentary
Bottles and containers filled with incendiary mixtures began to be used as early as the late 19th century – by the Cubans in their struggle for independence from Spain, and later in World War I. Although the principle had been known for a long time, let's recall the "Greek fire" used by the Byzantines during naval battles. But this is about something else: the incendiary grenade that became known as the "Molotov Cocktail" during World War II.
On September 1, 1939, World War II began with Nazi Germany's attack on Poland. Today, many historians are convinced that the explosive substance, the real "Molotov cocktail," that plunged the world into the hell of war was the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact – a pact of friendship and non-aggression between Germany and the Soviet Union. But is this really true? How and why did it all begin? Why did Hitler need this war—the second world war in a very short twenty-year period? Why didn't the Western powers seriously confront the aggressor? And instead of military action against Hitler, did they begin playing games, which even then were called the "phony" war? Military experts, historians, both in the West and in our country, as well as German generals themselves during Hitler's time, say that if England and France had acted decisively and struck from the western border in 1939, the subsequent course of events could have unfolded entirely differently. Finally, why did the Soviet Union remain so patiently silent about the actions of the Nazis for so long, and, moreover, take such a controversial step as signing a friendship and non-aggression treaty with Germany? The documentary "Molotov Cocktail" offers answers to these difficult and, at times, unpleasant questions. Unknown details of the interwar period and the hidden dynamics of European politics at that time. Our army's bloody defeat in battles with tiny Finland, the military conflict at Khalkhin Gol, the Soviet Union's secret war in Spain... And most importantly, priceless testimonies from veterans—those who actually participated in those events.
