A few months ago I came across a silent treasure, a time capsule of imagery filmed by my grandfather on an 8 mm home movie camera from the early 60s. Images of my grandparents, my great aunt, my great grandfather, my dad and his brother and the family and community surrounding them. Without meaning to, my grandfather created a time capsule of post war Jewish immigrant life in Canada, and gave me a keepsake of family history and of a moment in time that might have passed, but is very much laced in the present. Though soundless, these videos spoke in dreamy colours, flying swing sets and vintage dresses, and now they’re part of my language, too.

The very last second before I wake up is the worst for me
The language I dream in’s a little too rough on the lips for me
Little did I mean
Little did I say
Little did I show
Little did I think I cared
Little did I know it would haunt me every morning
The very last second before I wake up is the worst for me
The depth of my diving’s a little too much on the lungs for me
Little was the tug
Pulling on the moon
Leveling the tides
Struck me like a tidal wave
Still I couldn’t lose that which haunts me every morning
Break one spell
I cast another
All that magic spent on fluttering
The days don’t set
They simply hover
Never quite there
Always in between
The very last second before I wake up is the worst for me
The polished of prisms could never refract all the light in me
Little did I mean
Little did I say
Little did I show
Little did I think I cared
Little did I know it would haunt me every morning
Break one spell
I cast another
All that magic spent on fluttering
The days don’t set
They simply hover
Never quite there
Always in between
