Game description: Dark Souls (Japanese: da:ku so:ru, translated from English as "Dark Souls") is an action/RPG video game developed by the Japanese company From Software and released in 2011 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. From Software published the game in Japan; Namco Bandai Games published the game internationally. Dark Souls, originally known under the working title Project Dark, is the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls and the second installment in the Souls series.
The game is set in the fictional kingdom of Lordran, reminiscent of medieval Europe. Lordran is plagued by a curse that turns its inhabitants into undead; the protagonist, also an undead, is tasked with reigniting the sacred fire and restoring order. Dark Souls gameplay revolves around exploration, finding key items, and defeating bosses; the game features a high level of difficulty, designed to encourage the player to repeatedly die, and to learn from their mistakes.
Dark Souls received generally positive reviews from critics, with reviewers particularly praising its deep combat system, skillfully crafted levels, and detailed lore. While some reviewers praised the game's high difficulty, others found it overly demanding; the Microsoft Windows version also received more lukewarm reviews due to numerous technical issues. In 2012, the game was ported to Microsoft Windows. Additional content from the PC version was later released on consoles as downloadable content called Artorias of the Abyss. In 2018, the game was re-released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch under the title Dark Souls: Remastered. The game is available on Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility.
A sequel, Dark Souls II, was released in 2014.
