1. WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) Development
• The WBS is the foundation of project planning. It breaks down the overall project goal into smaller, manageable components or "work packages." This hierarchical structure helps define all the work needed to accomplish the project's deliverables. By dividing complex tasks into smaller, actionable items, the WBS enables clear task allocation, better resource management, and easier progress tracking.

2. Activity Definition and Task Dependencies
• Once the WBS is complete, activities are defined by breaking down each work package into specific tasks. Task dependencies indicate how tasks are related and influence scheduling, as some tasks need to be completed before others can start. Dependencies are often categorized into types, such as finish-to-start, start-to-start, and finish-to-finish, each specifying how the timing of one task influences another.

3. Leads and Lags
• Leads and lags adjust the timing between dependent tasks. Lead time allows a successor task to begin before the predecessor task is fully completed, helping speed up project progress. Lag time introduces a delay between tasks, ensuring they don’t begin immediately after one another. Properly adjusting leads and lags ensures tasks are neither rushed nor delayed unnecessarily, which helps optimize the project schedule.

4. Milestones
• Milestones are significant points or "checkpoints" in the project that mark the completion of key phases or deliverables. They help track progress and ensure that the project is on schedule. Milestones might include project deliverables, such as "invitations sent" in a wedding planning project, and can serve as moments to review progress or implement adjustments as needed.

5. Activity Sequencing
• Sequencing organizes tasks in the order they need to be performed, considering dependencies and resources. By correctly sequencing activities, a project manager ensures that tasks flow logically and resources are allocated efficiently. This process involves creating a task order based on predecessors and successors, which serves as the blueprint for developing more detailed scheduling tools like network diagrams.

6. Gantt Chart
• A Gantt chart visually represents the project schedule, showing tasks as bars across a timeline. This chart helps in tracking progress, as it clearly displays the start and finish dates of each task, along with any dependencies and slack (extra time available). Gantt charts make it easy to monitor the sequence and duration of activities, offering a visual summary of the project’s timeline.

7. Network Diagram
• Network diagrams illustrate the dependencies between tasks in a project and help identify potential scheduling conflicts. They show the flow of tasks, with arrows indicating dependencies. Two main types of network diagrams are Activity on Node (AON) and Activity on Arrow (AOA). These diagrams help identify relationships between tasks and lay the groundwork for critical path analysis.

8. Critical Path
• The critical path is the sequence of tasks that dictates the shortest possible project duration. Any delay in tasks on the critical path will extend the overall project timeline. Identifying the critical path helps project managers focus on tasks that are most crucial to the project’s timely completion, as these tasks have no slack and require close monitoring.
