Structural Equation Modeling literally means: modelling of structural equations. But what does that actually mean?
You create a model that outlines how different things (known as variables) are related to each other (your hypotheses), and then use statistical software to check whether your assumptions match your data.
This is especially helpful when you want to investigate theoretical constructs like learning motivation or satisfaction, things you can’t directly observe but want to measure through questionnaires or tests. And unlike traditional statistical methods, SEM doesn’t just analyse one relationship at a time, it looks at an entire network of relationships.
Let’s say you want to understand how certain factors interact during your studies. For example:
Does greater motivation lead to less procrastination? And does that, in turn, affect exam grades?
With conventional statistical tools, you’d have to analyse these relationships separately:
First motivation → procrastination, then procrastination → grades.
But with Structural Equation Modeling, you can analyse all of these connections simultaneously in a single model. You build a theoretical model outlining how the variables are related, and the statistics software checks whether your model fits the actual data.
