Packet Tracer will take you far — but there's a ceiling. When you need real Cisco IOS behavior, multi-vendor topologies, or advanced features that simulators can't replicate, you need an emulator. In this lecture, we install GNS3 from scratch and get you ready to run real Cisco IOS images in a full network emulation environment.
This is an optional upgrade for this course. Every core CCNA lab still runs on Packet Tracer. But if you want to build CCNP-level skills while earning your CCNA, GNS3 is where you start.

🔍 SIMULATOR VS EMULATOR — THE KEY DIFFERENCE
Packet Tracer is a simulator:
It approximates Cisco device behavior
Uses Cisco-written code that mimics IOS
Lightweight but limited to supported features
Perfect for learning fundamentals
GNS3 is an emulator:
Runs actual Cisco IOS software in a virtual environment
Every command behaves exactly as it would on real hardware
Supports features Packet Tracer never will
Heavier on system resources, but far more realistic
For CCNA you can succeed with Packet Tracer alone. For CCNP and real-world work, GNS3 or EVE-NG becomes essential.
💻 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum for small labs:
Windows 10/11, macOS 11 or newer, or a modern Linux distribution
8 GB of RAM
A modern 64-bit processor with virtualization support (Intel VT-x or AMD-V)
20 GB of free disk space
Virtualization enabled in BIOS/UEFI
Recommended for comfortable multi-device labs:
16 GB of RAM or more
SSD storage
Dedicated virtualization hypervisor (VMware Workstation, VirtualBox, or Hyper-V)
🏗️ GNS3 ARCHITECTURE EXPLAINED
GNS3 has three main components:
1. GNS3 GUI (the desktop application)
Where you design your topology — drag, drop, connect, and launch devices.
2. GNS3 Server (local or remote)
The engine that actually runs your emulated devices. Can run on your machine or on a dedicated VM.
3. GNS3 VM (recommended setup)
A purpose-built virtual machine that runs the GNS3 Server. Keeps the heavy lifting isolated from your host OS, improves stability, and supports more device types.
The standard professional setup is GUI on your host, Server inside the GNS3 VM. We walk through this exact configuration.
⚠️ VIRTUALIZATION — THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM
If GNS3 refuses to start the VM or throws a virtualization error:
Reboot and enter BIOS/UEFI
Enable Intel VT-x or AMD-V (naming varies by vendor)
On Windows, disable Hyper-V if using VMware or VirtualBox — they conflict
On Windows 11, check that Windows Hypervisor Platform, Virtual Machine Platform, and Windows Subsystem for Linux features align with your hypervisor choice
This single step blocks more GNS3 users than anything else. Get virtualization right and the rest is easy.
📀 SOURCING CISCO IOS IMAGES — LEGALLY
GNS3 does not ship with Cisco IOS images. You must provide your own, and you must do so legally:
If you have a valid Cisco Smart Account with software download rights, use those images
If your employer has a service contract, request access through your IT team
Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) is Cisco's official paid alternative with licensed images
Cisco VIRL was the predecessor to CML and used to be a common source
Do NOT download IOS images from random forums, torrent sites, or file-sharing services. This is both illegal and a massive security risk — many "free IOS images" are laced with malware.
If you don't have legal IOS images, you can still learn in GNS3 using:
Open-source routers (VyOS, FRR, OpenWrt)
Nokia SR Linux in lab mode
Arista vEOS (free community images)
Juniper vSRX (with developer access)
Multi-vendor skill is actually a career advantage — don't assume you need Cisco images to benefit from GNS3.
