Crazy to think this was 6 years ago, I cringe a bit at my explanations here, but hey we all have to start somewhere.
If you are getting a thin layer of grey around the edges, instead of using "LumaKey" try going to the effects controls and changing the blend mode from "Normal" to Multiply for text on a black background. Use "Screen" for text on a white background.
