The events of Fate/Zero unfold over two weeks in the Japanese city of Fuyuki (冬木), ten years before the events of the visual novel Fate/stay night, and are known as the "Fourth Holy Grail War." Two hundred years earlier, three families of magi—the von Einzberns, the Matou, and the Tohsaka—decided to join forces to attain the "Root" (根源 Kongen)—the power located at the center of all dimensions of the world and a limitless source of magical energy capable of granting any wish of a magus.[6] To this end, a ritual complex called the "Great Holy Grail" (Dai Seihai, 大聖杯) was constructed in Fuyuki City, a region of Japan lacking the control of the Magi's Association (魔術協会, Majutsu Kyōkai) under the control of the Tohsaka family. They also developed the concept of "Servants," whose spiritual essences would become part of the Holy Grail during the process. The von Einzbern family developed the vessel for the Holy Grail, and the Matou family developed a system of "Command Spells" (令呪, Reiju, or absolute obedience orders) to control the Servants. The first summoning ritual, later known as the first "Holy Grail War" (聖杯戦争 Seihai Sensō), ended in failure due to conflict between the families who realized that the Grail could only grant the wish of one person.
