Use VirtualBox SnapShots
Snapshots are what makes Virtual Machines powerful magic. You can make all the changes you dare to your virtual machine and if you don't like the changes or the changes blow up your virtual machine, snapshots allow you to restore your virtual machine to before the changes. Nothing difficult here except you do need to make sure you keep track of what each snapshot is about.
