For nearly five centuries, the Ottoman Empire dominated the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa. At the height of its power, the padishah's armies fought on several fronts, achieving victories against the other great powers of their time—Spain, Austria, Poland, and Persia. Ottoman pirates plundered European shores, and the sultan's alliances stretched from Morocco in the west to the island of Sumatra in the east.
Falling under the shadow of the Crescent, Balkan Christians lost their independence, social freedoms, and the opportunity to develop their own culture. This enormous burden often raises the question for their descendants in today's free countries: "Could the Ottoman conquest have been avoided?"
