Vitebsk is an ancient city with a history spanning over 1,000 years. It is the third most populous city in Belarus and the country's cultural center.
Vitebsk gained worldwide fame thanks to Marc Chagall, and in the early 20th century, it became the scene of activity for some of the most prominent figures of the 20th century. Ilya Repin, Konstantin Malevich, Roman Falk, Maximilian Dobuzhinsky, El Lissitzky, and Oskar Zadkine—all of these people were connected to the city and were influenced by its "genius loci."
