PreAlgebra: 7-1 What are Ratios and Rates?
A ratio is a comparison between two like numbers such as the number of bananas to apples, both being fruits, or the number of wins to losses, both being the result of a game. A rate is a comparison between to numbers that are not like. An example would be the number of miles that a car travels per hour, or the number of words that are typed in a certain time limit.
