Common Layer Styles
Drop Shadow: Adds a shadow that falls behind the layer.
Inner Shadow: Adds a shadow that falls just inside the edges of the layer.
Outer Glow: Adds a glow around the outside of the layer.
Inner Glow: Adds a glow that emanates from the inside edges of the layer.
Bevel and Emboss: Adds highlights and shadows to give the layer a 3D appearance.
Satin: Applies an inward-facing shadow and highlights to create a satin-like finish.
Color Overlay: Applies a solid color over the entire layer.
Gradient Overlay: Applies a gradient over the entire layer.
Pattern Overlay: Applies a pattern over the entire layer.
Stroke: Adds an outline to the layer.
How to Apply Layer Styles
Select the Layer:
Click on the layer in the timeline that you want to apply a style to.
Access Layer Styles:
Go to Layer Layer Styles.
Alternatively, right-click on the layer and go to Layer Styles.
Choose a Style:
Select the desired style from the list (e.g., Drop Shadow, Outer Glow, etc.).
Adjust Settings:
Once the style is applied, you can tweak the settings in the Timeline panel under the layer. You’ll see the Layer Styles dropdown where you can adjust the specific settings for each effect, such as opacity, distance, spread, size, etc.
Example: Applying a Drop Shadow
Select the Layer: Click on the text or shape layer you want to add a drop shadow to.
Apply Drop Shadow: Right-click on the layer, go to Layer Styles, and choose Drop Shadow.
Adjust Drop Shadow Settings:
In the Timeline panel, expand the Layer Styles dropdown.
Adjust settings like Opacity, Angle, Distance, Spread, and Size to achieve the desired effect.
Combining Multiple Styles
You can apply multiple layer styles to a single layer. For example, you might add both an Outer Glow and a Bevel and Emboss effect to a text layer to make it stand out more.
Animating Layer Styles
Layer styles can also be animated. To do this:
Activate the Stopwatch: Next to the property you want to animate (e.g., Opacity of Drop Shadow), click the stopwatch icon.
Set Keyframes: Move the playhead to different points in the timeline and adjust the property to set keyframes.
Example Use Case: Creating a Shiny Button
Create a Shape Layer: Draw a rectangle using the Shape tool.
Apply Bevel and Emboss: Go to Layer Styles Bevel and Emboss and adjust the settings to give the button a 3D look.
Add Gradient Overlay: Go to Layer Styles Gradient Overlay and set up a gradient to add depth.
Add Drop Shadow: Finally, apply a Drop Shadow to make the button pop out from the background.
