CALCULATION OF LOOPS
1. It's better to count the number of groups of loops rather than stitches.
2. The number of loops decreases from the cast-on to the main fabric.
When casting on, groups of 4 loops are formed on a single base.
For an oval, 3 loops will remain from a group of 4 loops.
For a straight edge, 2 loops will remain from a group of 4 loops.
Example:
You need 90 loops for the main fabric. How should you knit the edge to reach this number of loops?
Count backwards.
For an oval, 3 loops will remain from the group, meaning 90 : 3 = 30 groups of loops. (Group of 4 stitches, 30 x 4 = 120 stitches).
For the straight edge, 2 stitches will remain from the group, meaning 90:2 = 45 groups of stitches. (Group of 4 stitches, 45 x 4 = 180 stitches).
Note: For the straight edge, the calculated number of groups of stitches may be insufficient, as the edge is not sufficiently stretchable, while the main fabric may be stretchable.
