The Lost 80s Sci Fi That Inspired Pac-Man [AI Art]

“The Pack Men” was a 1980 dystopian sci fi movie that followed the adventures of a moving company, the “Pack Men” that used “the Network”, a sort of virtual world/internet precursor to transport high importance intelligence and cyber weaponry “in a world that [had] moved on from roads”. The film would have been based around the evil corporation Vabadus trying to take control of the network by releasing viruses known as Specters, and the pack men needing to find a way to escape not only with their delivery, but their lives.
Producers thought the notion of an “internetwork connecting the entire world was the stupidest thing [they’d] ever heard. No one in their right minds would ever believe anything like it”. Producers ultimately axed the project when the movie wasted it’s entire 40 million dollar budget to only produce it’s teaser trailer. They were able to recoup some of their costs by re- editing the trailer and selling the footage to overseas bowling alleys to play footage when bowlers would bowl spares or strikes.
Existence of the movie may have been completely forgotten had it not been for the recent discovery of a badly worn vhs copy of the unedited trailer while renovating an abandoned straw hat pizza in Tokyo which had doubled as a bowling alley - “Pizza Bowl Gaiden” - in the late 70s/early 80s.
While no one on the Pac-Man development team has ever confirmed seeing footage of the Pack Men while bowling at “Pizza Bowl Gaiden”, the movie’s influence remains obvious.
