The flag of Iceland consists of a blue field with a white cross outlined in blue. The cross is offset toward the hoist side (the left side of the flag). The vertical stripe of the cross is positioned closer to the hoist side than the horizontal one. The blue color represents the Atlantic Ocean, while the white symbolizes the snow and glaciers of Iceland. The design is based on the traditional Nordic cross motif, reflecting Iceland's historical ties to Scandinavia. The flag was officially adopted on June 17, 1944, when Iceland became a republic independent from Denmark.
