I'm leaving this up for a bit longer because I want anyone who looks for Vortex instructions to read the pain and tears in the comments of people who can't get it to work. Or just follow the link to the r2modman tutorial and never look back...

r2modman install/setup video:    • Valheim- easiest mod manager install tutor...

Nov 8th 2023 Update: with 0.217.25ish managing mods with vortex has become problematic. I pinned a question and some options from a couple days ago, but the best suggestion I can give atm is: Install and use r2modman instead of vortex to manage mods for Valheim.

To get it working using vortex (last I checked anyway) you basically have to manually download/install bepinex- and repeat that each time they patch it. The point of a mod manager is so you can spend less time futzing with setup and more time playing.

/end Nov 8th update

Older NOTICE from when it previously broke, but could be tweaked to work: with 0.214.3 there are a couple adjustments from the video... that actually make this EASIER! Yay!

First time installing?
If you are doing this for the first time, you no longer need to download bepinex- it will automatically grab it when you go to deploy Epic Loot or another mod that depends on bepinex.

So ignore istalling bepinex in the video. Make sure to launch the game you are launching it from within vortex (upper left corner where the play button is on Valheim).

Already have installed? This is also easy, but since there are a few scenarios it just looks complicated. So just follow the steps...

If the version of bepinex you see sitting in Vortex is 5.4.19, first try to update it to latest (ending 2102 atm). If that works, you should be good to go. If it does not work...

Click on the "remove" button for bepinex and make sure both "remove mod" and "delete archive" are checked. Then click "remove" to confirm. This will ask you to elevate/deploy. When this happens Vortex should automatically grab the latest version of BepInEx (currently 5.4.2102) and ask you to deploy/elevate again. Do so. You may need to close/reopen vortex to trigger this.

It does this because you have a mod in vortex that requires bepinex.

If you removed bepinex and it doesn't automatically grab it even after relaunching vortex and clicking to elevate/deploy, it is because you probably have a bepinex folder in your game folder.

Navigate to your game folder- you can delete everything down to the files in this gif...

Then relaunch vortex- it should grab the latest bepinex. Again you should need to elevate/deploy and then your valheim folder will repopulate with a bunch of files.

Again remember to launch the game from within Vortex using the play button in the upper left corner.

This will help you get up and running using Vortex mod manager and the handful of mods I like for my Valheim Epic Loot playthroughs.
