What is CPE self study, basically a course that you take that is not presented live. It always includes a final exam, usually five questions, sometimes more, but usually just five questions per credit or per hour, you usually have to make a 70 or better to pass. Some states require some types of courses like ethics, you have to have an 80 or a 90, but just general CPE self study is a 70 to pass.
It can be in text, it can be a video based course or it can be both. And credits are based on the naza word count formula, which is approximately 185 words per minute, plus a score for review questions plus a ver score for final exam questions.
Next, what are the different types of CPE self study? There's plain self-study, which is just a piece of text usually, but that's older and really not accepted that much anymore. Then there's interactive self-study, which came along after that, which means that the review questions have what's called evaluative feedback, meaning each question is identified as right or wrong or correct or incorrect and why it is. It's not as old but it's still been phased out mostly and replaced with QA s self-study, which is the current NASBA standard QA S stands for quality assurance service.
And lastly, do you have to use QA s self study? Or do you mean, is that the only thing you can use? Well, yes, it is. If you are in a QA state, and those are Florida, Oregon, Tennessee, and a few others, check your state because it changes from time to time, most states don't, don't become QA s and then go away. But some states are adding it. And there are a few per year that are adding it. And we're going to look right now at how to check.
The easiest way is to go to our site CPE think.com. And go over here and hover over the company menu, go down the first column to where you see state CPE requirements. Click on that. And you will go to NASBA's National Registry of CPE sponsors page CPE requirements. And you can scroll down to let's say Florida was one I mentioned.
You click on that easiest thing to do once you get here is to do Ctrl F and search and then go QAS and it will take you to right here you will see self-study sponsors of self-study programs and accounting, auditing, and technical business subjects must be approved by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy as quality assurance service.
This means that Florida is a QAS state, you can go back up here and if you look at something, say for example, like Alabama, and you search and you don't see anything come up for QA s, so you don't have to be a QAS provider for Alabama.
But if you scroll down here, if you scroll down here, you will see that Alabama accept CPE credits for programs offer offered by national registry sponsors that's NASBA it's just not NASBA QAS so if you do if you're an Alabama and you run across a nasbla sponsor that offers something other than QAS courses, you can still take those, but if you're in Florida, this would not work they have to be a QAS course.
So come some courses or QA s some courses are not some sponsors offer only q s we in we used to offer quite a mix, but we have maybe less than 5% of our courses are now non QAS and those are mostly board approved ethics courses that are technically have to be different and so they're not QAS but other than that we are for all intents and purposes a QAS side as our most NASBA sponsors these days, but do check because you don't know until you check.
