Roman Sergeevich Kostomarov (born February 8, 1977, Moscow) is a Russian figure skater who competed in ice dancing with Tatyana Navka. Together, they are the 2006 Olympic champion, two-time world champion, three-time European champion, three-time Grand Prix Final winner, the 1996 World Junior Champion, and three-time Russian champion. He is an Honored Master of Sports of Russia.
At various times, Kostomarov's partners have also included Ekaterina Davydova and Anna Semenovich.
He began figure skating at the age of 9 at the AZLK Ice Palace under the guidance of Lidiya Karavaeva. Roman debuted at the World Junior Championships with her daughter, Ekaterina Davydova, and competed for about 10 years, winning the World Junior Championships in 1996 and bronze at the Russian Championships in 1997. They were favorites at the Winter Universiade but failed to qualify.
In 1998, he transferred to Natalia Linichuk's group, who suggested he partner with Tatyana Navka. The new duo lived and trained in Delaware, USA.
A year later, Natalia Linichuk deemed the duo unpromising and offered Roman a new partner, Anna Semenovich. They won silver at the 2000 Russian Championships, but only finished 10th at the European Championships and 13th at the World Championships. After this, Kostomarov decided to renew his collaboration with Tatyana Navka. Tatyana's husband, Alexander Zhulin, became their coach.
Navka and Kostomarov approached the 2006 Turin Olympics as undisputed favorites: they hadn't lost a single competition since 2004, winning gold in every one. The skaters focused primarily on their free program, featuring the dance "Carmen," choreographed by Tatyana Druchinina, the 1987 World Champion in rhythmic gymnastics. As Navka admitted, while preparing the Spanish dance, she was "inspired by the image of the brilliant ballerina Maya Plisetskaya." On the eve of the Olympics, the program was well received by the French public at the European Championships in Lyon. The Olympic start wasn't easy: after the compulsory dance, the Olympic hosts, 2001 World Champions Barbara Fusar-Poli and Maurizio Margaglio, were in the lead. In the original dance, the Italian made a serious mistake, falling during a simple element, and the Russians pulled ahead, with a lead of less than 1.5 points over the Americans, Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto. In the decisive free dance, the American skaters made two mistakes, while Navka and Kostomarov, according to Elena Vaitsekhovskaya, delivered an "outstanding performance." The judges' score was more moderate—101.37 points, lower than the pair's record of 113.17—but still sufficient for Olympic gold. "Tears of happiness streamed down Carmen's face," the enthusiastic newspapers wrote. The champions performed a highly emotional number to the romance "They Don't Renounce Love" by Mark Minkov and Veronika Tushnova, with a spectacular and memorable ending, at the final gala concert, and subsequently performed it repeatedly in various performances.[2][3]
After winning the 2006 Turin Olympics, Tatyana Navka and Roman Kostomarov decided to end their athletic careers. It was immediately decided that the couple would remain together and continue performing in professional shows.
After retiring from athletics, Roman returned from the United States to Russia. Since 2006, he has been a regular participant in Channel One projects produced by Ilya Averbukh. Kostomarov has also tried his hand at acting. In 2008, he made his acting debut in the television series "Hot Ice," and in 2010, two films starring him were released: the crime drama "Close Enemy" and the comedy "On Betrayal."
