[Is Vanillin Safe? Should you bake cookies with this artificial ingredient?]
Today Amanda shares with you the dirt on Vanillin. What is vanillin and should you consume this artificial ingredient?
Vanilla is made by harvesting the fruit pods (beans) of the vanilla plant and then soaking in alcohol to extract the flavor. This creates a delicious liquid we often add to many baked treats and drinks.
Pure vanilla extract is wonderful! The increased demand for vanilla has lead to the production of artificial vanilla.
Synthetic vanillin is an artificial vanilla flavor. Unlike pure vanilla extract (which is made from plants), “natural flavor” vanilla is a chemical compound designed to taste like vanilla. There are no health benefits to consuming this artificial compound and has even been shown to be the cause of headaches and allergic responses.
