When your child's other parent doesn't show up, it can be hard. It's not just one of those "well, he's an adult and can do what he wants" things—it's a huge emotional blow to your child.
Make sure to let your children know that both parents love them and that schedule inconsistencies are not their fault. So overreaction should be avoided.
If the situation becomes chronic, consider talking with them about their behavior—maybe even setting up some ground rules so that they don't get away with it on repeat occasions! For example, you might agree that there is a 15 minute window around pick up times, or that rescheduling must happen at least four hours in advance. Ask if they need to make some permanent schedule changes so that your child is not disappointed so often. It sends a message to your child that they don't come first.
Whatever happens, resist the urge the blame the absent parent for the fact that plans go unfulfilled, especially in front of the children.
