UPDATE: so after a bit of faffing around I discovered that multiplayer does actually work but it is only available to a very limited number of games. For instance TMNT, Sunset riders and Simpsons work but bomberman, secret of mana and quartet don't :(
You have to look for games that specifically state in the name title that they are 4 player versions.
I also checked in the games market and there seems to be less then 10 mutliplayer games available.
