SketchUp System Preferences You Must Change for a Better Workflow Experience
Introduction
If you want a smoother, faster, and more enjoyable experience while working in SketchUp, then adjusting the right system preferences is extremely important. Many beginners struggle with SketchUp not because the software is difficult, but because their system preferences are not properly configured. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the essential SketchUp system preferences you need to change so you can work more efficiently without wasting your time.
Let’s get straight into it.
How to Access SketchUp System Preferences
To begin, open SketchUp and navigate to the top menu.
Click on Window, then scroll down and select Preferences.
By default, SketchUp opens the Accessibility tab. From here, we’ll move through the most important settings that directly affect your workflow and modeling experience.
Adjusting Drawing Preferences for Better Control
Next, click on the Drawing tab.
Enable Click-Move-Click
Under the Drawing options, make sure you check Click-Move-Click.
This setting improves precision when moving objects and helps you work more accurately, especially when modeling architectural elements.
Disable Pre-Pick
While still in the Drawing section, disable Pre-Pick.
This helps reduce accidental selections and improves control when working on complex models.
Optimizing General Settings in SketchUp
Now, move to the General tab.
Shake to Create Backup
You can turn Shake to Create Backup on or off. However, since SketchUp already has an Auto Save feature, there’s no strong need for additional manual backups. Leaving Auto Save enabled is usually enough to protect your work.
Software Updates
If you prefer to work without interruptions, you can uncheck Software Updates. This prevents SketchUp from distracting you with update notifications while you’re modeling.
Once you’ve completed these adjustments, click OK to save your settings.
Other Useful Preferences You Can Explore
SketchUp offers many other customization options that you can explore later, including:
Shortcuts – where you can manually assign keyboard shortcuts to tools you use frequently
Templates – allowing you to set default modeling units and styles
Additional system controls to personalize your workflow
For now, these core settings are more than enough to significantly improve your experience.
