Alexander Fleming was a Scottish doctor and microbiologist who discovered the world’s first effective antibiotic: penicillin. This discovery revolutionized medicine, and has been described as the single greatest victory ever achieved over disease. It’s estimated that well over 200 million people have had their lives saved by penicillin. It’s hard to think of another person from history who has saved that many people.
