The History of the Saadi Dynasty
The Saadi Dynasty of Morocco appeared at the beginning of the 16th Century, when the country had gone into decline and was facing aggression from Portugal and Spain.
By 1554, the dynasty had toppled the Fes-based Wattasid Dynasty, reunited the country and warded off the Portuguese and Spanish. In 1591, it famously conquered the Songhay capital of Gao, giving it an empire stretching across the Sahara.
In 1603, a succession war began that quickly brought it to ruin. It never recovered, and fell to the Alaouite Dynasty later in the century.
