How To Interface LCD in 4 Bits Mode
There are two modes of LCD connecting with the microcontroller.
8-Bits Mode
4-Bits Mode
The appropriate mode is selected at the beginning of the operation in the process called “Initialization”. The 8-bits LCD mode uses outputs D0-to-D7 to transfer data. And 4-bits mode uses only 4 higher bits D4-to-D7 for communication, while others may be left unconnected.

Function Set
DL = 1 8 bits mode, DL = 0 4 bits mode
N = 1 Display in two lines, N = 0 Display in one line
F = 1 Format 5x10 Dots, F = 0 Format 5x7 Dots

Project: How To Interface LCD in 4-Bits Mode.
In this project, we will use the 16x2 characters LCD. LCD’s data pins D4 to D7 will interface with RC4, RC5, RC6, RC7, and LCD control pins EN and RS with PORTC of PIC16F877 microcontroller. The microcontroller operates with an 8MHz crystal.
