JFK Airport, New York, January 25 1990. It's 8:00 PM, dark, the weather is bad, and the skies are congested. The Avianca 707, with 158 passengers on board, begins its descent. Approach control directs it to a first holding point, then a second, then a third. The aircraft circles for over an hour and a half. Landing becomes urgent as the fuel level is critically low. Finally, the control tower gives clearance to land. But the 707 is not alone. Three planes are ahead of it, on the same runway. One after another, all four engines fail: the plane goes into freefall and crashes north of Long Island. Rescuers manage to extract more than 80 survivors from the wreckage.
