This situation is familiar to many drivers: there's construction ahead, a temporary barrier, and a man in a vest announcing "tolls apply." The rate depends on the vehicle, and there's no cash register or paperwork. In such situations, the most important thing is not to argue, but to act legally and through official channels.

The first rule is to record. Start recording on your phone, introduce yourself, and ask for the position, organization, and last name of the shift supervisor. Clarify the reason for the traffic restriction: the work order number, the contractor, the traffic management plan, and the dispatcher's phone number. If they say "pay or go around," calmly reply that cash payments without a cash register and receipt are unacceptable, and offer to resolve the matter through the appropriate authorities.

A short roadmap:
1. Request the contractor's contact information and contact the dispatcher.
2. Ask to see official documents (there can't be toll booths on public roads).
3. If you are threatened or blocked, record everything and call 911 or the traffic police station.
4. Don't pay in cash: a verbal receipt is invalid.
5. If it's safer to go around, choose an alternative route and send a video to the authorities.

To avoid such situations: check for road closures in your GPS, keep the phone numbers of road services, keep a business card for witnesses, and avoid haggling on the road.

Command + recording + official channels = a legal outcome without unnecessary risks.
