It was the spring of 1943. Soviet troops had seized a bridgehead on the "Malaya Zemlya" (Small Land) near Novorossiysk. In the Caucasus, the Red Army was confidently advancing, preparing to break through the "Blue Line," a powerful system of German fortifications in the lower reaches of the Kuban River. Soviet fighter pilots would play a special role in the upcoming operation. They would be the ones to end the German air force's dominance in the skies over Kuban.
Before the war, only film actors rivaled the popularity of pilots in the USSR. Young people were literally eager to conquer the skies, training in flying clubs. The Air Force's strength was growing. But the first German air strike on June 22, 1941, disabled most Soviet airfields and aircraft. Pilots lacked not only aircraft but also experience in aerial combat. Soviet fighters had a particularly difficult time in the skies over Rzhev, where they clashed with the German aces of Mölders' squadron. A turning point in the situation only began toward the end of 1942. Soviet pilots began to adopt German combat tactics and master new aircraft types—Yaks, LaGGs, and MiGs.
The series details the various types of German and Soviet fighters during the war. Veterans will share their memories of the daily life of this branch of the armed forces: what they flew in and how, about "free hunting," about rewards for shooting down an enemy aircraft, and about the battle in the air over Taman.
A separate section of the film is dedicated to the history of the Order of Lenin.
